Septum Piercings
Septum piercings have been around far longer than we can even document. Modern septum piercing has evolved from the “native” piercing that so shocked ethnocentric European explorers back the 17th century, and the “bull rings” worn by fashionable leather daddies in the 1970s and 80s, to the piercing of choice for those looking for something subdued and contemporary today.
This piercing tends to be an easy one to sit through, and heals rather quickly: usually in about six to eight weeks. It goes through the thin membrane of tissue between the hard cartilage that gives the nose its shape and the thicker skin below, placed closer to the tip of the nose than the face. (This is often referred to as the “sweet spot.”)
The septum piercing has the distinction of being the only facial piercing you can easily hide while it’s healing; this can be done by wearing a septum retainer (or sometimes a circular barbell) and flipping it up inside the nose where it can’t show. Initial jewelry is usually 14 gauge, but 12 gauge (and sometimes even 10 gauge) jewelry works too. After healing, there are dozens of options for jewelry, everything from plain steel rings to hinged gold “clickers” with precious stones set in them. We’re more than happy to go over your different options with you; just stop in!

- Healing Time: Healing time for septum piercings is typically between 2 to 3 months. During the initial healing phase, you may experience some swelling and tenderness. It's crucial to follow proper aftercare instructions to avoid complications.
Proper aftercare is essential for a smooth healing process and to prevent complications. Here are some key tips:
- Clean Regularly: Gently clean the piercing once a day with a saline solution or a piercing aftercare product recommended by your piercer.
- Avoid Irritants: Keep the area free from makeup, hair products, and other potential irritants. Avoid touching the piercing with dirty hands.
- Be Mindful: Avoid touching or playing with the jewelry to reduce the risk of infection and irritation.

Frequently Asked Questions:
- Common Concerns:
- Is It Easy to Hide?: Septum piercings are the easiest facial piercing to hide. If you wear a septum retainer, all you need to do to hide it is flip it up inside your nostrils.
- Why Does My Piercing Stink?: Your skin secretes natural oils and constantly sloughs off dead skin cells, which tend to collect around your piercing and on your jewelry. Regular, thorough cleaning should take care of it.
- Can I Flip Up a Circular Barbell and Hide the Piercing, Like I Can with a Retainer?: While this may work for some people, if their nostrils are large enough and the jewelry is small enough, it doesn’t work for everyone. Discuss your options with your piercer.
- Is It an Easy Piercing to Stretch?:
- Stretching your septum may make your eyes water, or make you sneeze, but it is usually not too difficult or too painful. However, stretching the piercing to larger sizes can become increasingly difficult as the jewelry starts to put more pressure on the hard cartilage in the nose. If you do get to that point and still want to stretch more, give your body more time in-between stretches. As always, listen to your body.
- When Can I Put in Fancy Jewelry?:
- While most of these pieces of jewelry are too busy to be used for initial piercings, they are just fine for fully healed septums. It is best to give your piercing at least two months before changing jewelry, but afterward the possibilities are endless.
