Industrial

Industrial piercings are two piercings that are congruent with each other to allow for a bar to be placed between them. Your piercer will mark your ear with two dots to show the placement of each piercing that will connect with a single bar. Because industrial piercings rely on a specific ear shape in order to line up properly, they are highly dependent on the individual’s anatomy. Your piercer will consult with you on your personal ear anatomy to see if an industrial piercing will work with your ear; not everyone’s ears are conducive to industrial piercings.

  • Jewelry Options: The initial piercing is usually done with a barbell. (Using separate jewelry for healing can result in different angles when trying to connect the piercings later.) 14 gauge is usually the starting thickness, with length ranging anywhere from 1 1/8” to 1 3/8”, depending on the ear.
  • Healing Time: The initial healing period for an industrial piercing is typically 6 months to 1 year.
  • Procedure: The industrial piercing is really two piercings in one: an outer helix piercing connected to a forward helix piercing by a straight barbell. Your piercer will work with you to determine the best placement for the piercing, especially if you are considering multiple piercings.

Proper aftercare is essential for a smooth healing process and to prevent complications. Here are some key tips:

  • Clean Regularly: Gently clean the piercing once a day with a saline solution or a piercing aftercare product recommended by your piercer.
  • Avoid Irritants: Keep the area free from makeup, hair products, and other potential irritants. Avoid touching the piercing with dirty hands.
  • Be Mindful: Avoid touching or playing with the jewelry to reduce the risk of infection and irritation.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Common Concerns:
    • Swelling and Irritation: Treat swelling with cold packs and elevation. Anti-inflammatories can help, and avoid things that thin your blood further (including alcohol, aspirin, and Tylenol).
    • Migration and Rejection: Industrial piercings can sometimes migrate or "grow out" over time. If the piercing starts to migrate, it's better to remove the jewelry early to minimize scarring.
    • Bleeding: Bleeding may continue—usually intermittently—for a few days. Localized bruising is normal, though not typical for most piercings. Heavy blood flow or bleeding that continues for longer than a few days may be cause for concern, and you should contact your piercer or a physician.
    • Sleeping: You want to avoid sleeping on an industrial piercing because it adds additional pressure on the jewelry. It will be more likely to have scarring if you sleep on it.
  • Can anyone get an industrial piercing?:
    • Industrial piercings depend greatly upon your ear anatomy, so not everyone is suitable for one. Your piercer will consult with you on your personal ear anatomy to see if an industrial piercing will work with your ear.
  • How Soon Can I Change My Jewelry?:
    • The initial jewelry should be left in for at least 6 months to ensure proper healing. However, downsizing may be possible at around 6 weeks, depending on how well the piercing is healing. Always consult with your piercer before making any changes to your jewelry to avoid complications.
