Forward Helix
The forward helix piercing goes through the outer helix, or pinna, above the tragus, where the helix attaches to the face. This piercing has exploded in popularity over the years, especially done in multiples. You can see this with a simple search for "triple forward helix" on either Pinterest or Tumblr. The triple forward helix piercing became so popular that it was profiled in issue #58 of The Point: The Quarterly Journal of the Association of Professional Piercers.

Jewelry Options: Suggested initial jewelry is usually a 16 gauge press-fit post, which you can get with anything from a basic, plain ball to ornate gold and diamond ends—and most everything in-between. Procedure: Due to the individualized anatomy of the ear, your piercer will work with you to determine the best placement for the piercing, especially if you are considering multiple piercings.
Proper aftercare is essential for a smooth healing process and to prevent complications. Here are some key tips:
- Clean Regularly: Gently clean the piercing once a day with a saline solution or a piercing aftercare product recommended by your piercer.
- Avoid Irritants: Keep the area free from makeup, hair products, and other potential irritants. Avoid touching the piercing with dirty hands.
- Be Mindful: Avoid touching or playing with the jewelry to reduce the risk of infection and irritation.

Frequently Asked Questions:
- Common Concerns:
- Swelling and Irritation: Treat swelling with cold packs and elevation. Anti-inflammatories can help, and avoid things that thin your blood further (including alcohol, aspirin, and Tylenol).
- Migration and Rejection: Flat piercings can sometimes migrate or "grow out" over time. If the piercing starts to migrate, it's better to remove the jewelry early to minimize scarring.
- Can I get both ears pierced at the same time?:
- While it is possible to pierce both ears at the same time, it's often recommended to pierce one ear at a time to facilitate easier healing and care. Consult with your piercer for personalized advice.
- How many forward helix piercings can I get?:
- For multiple forward helix piercings, we suggest you come in and talk to one of our piercers to help you to realize your multi-piercing project. How many posts you are able to fit in this small space depends on your anatomy, and not every ear is suited for multiple forward helix piercings.
- How Soon Can I Change The Jewelry?:
- The initial jewelry should be left in for at least 6 months to ensure proper healing. However, downsizing may be possible at around 6 weeks, depending on how well the piercing is healing. Always consult with your piercer before making any changes to your jewelry to avoid complications.
